The period of STD benefits varies, but is often between 4 to 12 months, depending on the plan.
If you have STD benefits coverage, Long Term Disability (LTD) benefits will not commence until after the STD benefits period ends. Short Term Benefits are most often paid by the employer while LTD benefits are most often paid directly by the LTD insurance company.
Most employers will have application forms for STD benefits and it is important to complete the forms, including forms for your doctor to complete as soon as possible. If you do not apply for STD benefits, you may not be able to later apply for LTD benefits
If you do not have STD benefits coverage, you can typically qualify for Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits with Service Canada, during the waiting period before obtaining LTD benefits.
